For several people, a trip to the dentist can be an anxiety trigger. Some people even have a complete phobia about going to the dentist and are paralyzed with fear at the mere thought. Many people don’t understand that there is a solution available to help you overcome any fear or anxiety that a dental visit brings. We will assess your situation and make the perfect medication choice for you.
There are several different methods of sedation we use:
Oral sedation is the mildest form of sedative we offer. The dentist can prescribe an oral sedative. It will have to be taken the day of your appointment or the night before. These sedatives help relax the muscles around your jaw and neck to ease the dental visit or treatment. Oral sedatives are usually used for light dental work on your teeth and are not for pain relief.
IV sedation is more powerful and sedates the patient during the operation. This type of sedation is for more extreme cases and also allows the patient to feel no pain during the procedures. IV sedation leaves a patient with no memory of the operation, and they may feel groggy for a short while after they wake up from the procedure. IV sedation is very safe and efficient. Also, it’s one of the most common forms of sedation.
Laughing gas or nitrous oxide is another sedation alternative. Laughing gas is administered through a mask over your mouth and nose. This sedation method relaxes the patient while another local anesthetic is also applied for dual pain relief and relaxation.
