Keeping You Comfortable With Sedation

When you have anxiety about dental care, or haven’t visited the dentist in a number of years, you could be feeling nervous. For some, this could be severe enough to avoid treatment altogether. Which is why we offer solutions to help ensure a comfortable visit. Our team of cosmetic dental experts in Greensboro, NC, can offer sedation dentistry.

When You Need a Calming Solution

When should you consider sedation? We may recommend this for people with a fear of the dentist. We know your phobia is real and we will never minimize it, but our calming medications can help you undergo necessary treatment with comfort and ease. This could also be helpful for those with special needs or an overactive gag reflex that makes receiving even minor procedures a difficult process. If you are receiving more extensive treatments, such as wisdom tooth extraction or dental implant placement, this can help you stay relaxed and comfortable.

Assessing Which is Right for You

We have three different options, so how do we know which is right for you? Our team will take a number of different factors into account. For example, we will look at your weight, age, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking.

Three Dental Sedation Options

The most commonly prescribed option is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. The patient wears a mask over the nose and breathes in the gas to enter a relaxed state. The effects are immediate and also wear off once the procedure ends, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school. You stay conscious, but will likely have no memory of the procedure.

If you need a deeper state of calm, then oral conscious can help. This is administered through a pill or liquid taken before the procedure begins. You enter a deeper state of calm, but remain conscious. You have little to no memory of the procedure at all, and since the effects take time to wear off, be sure you have someone on hand to bring you home afterward.

The deepest form of calming is administered intravenously. IV sedation helps you enter a deep sleep-like state, with little to no memory of the procedure at all. The effects also take time to wear off, so you will need a friend or family member to take you home afterward.
